Lady Marmalade is a single recorded by Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mýa and Pink for the soundtrack of the 2001 film Moulin Rouge!, a cover of the Labelle hit.
This version was produced by Missy Elliott and Rockwilder; the original song was written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan, while the rap part of the cover was written and performed by Lil’ Kim. The lyrics of the song were slightly adapted to transfer the setting of the story from New Orleans to the Moulin Rouge in Paris.
This version of Lady Marmalade also reached number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, remaining there for five weeks. Lady Marmalade was the fourth song to reach that position for Christina Aguilera, the first for the other three singers; Aguilera would have to wait a decade before returning to the top of the US charts with the song Moves like Jagger, in collaboration with the pop rock band Maroon 5.
The single won in the category of best pop collaboration with vocals at the 2002 Grammy Awards. The single has sold approximately 5.2 million copies worldwide.
